Wedding Reception Games: Fun Ideas, Sign Wording & Etiquette
The wedding breakfast is over, the speeches are a happy blur and the band won't start for another hour. That lull between courses and the first dance is where reception games come into their own. Done well, they get tables chatting, help guests who don't know each other find common ground, and leave you with a few treasures to read back after the day.
Here are our favourite reception games for a modern UK wedding, how to word the signs and cards, and a little gentle etiquette to keep everything feeling relaxed rather than forced.
First Dance Sweepstake
A first dance sweepstake is one of the easiest ways to build excitement before the big moment. Guests pick a song (or "buy" a square for a small donation) from a grid, and whoever lands on the track you actually dance to wins a prize. It's especially fun if you've kept your song a secret.
Guess our first dance! Write your name next to the song you think we'll dance to. The winner takes home a bottle of fizz.
First Dance Sweepstake — £1 a square. All proceeds go to our honeymoon fund (and one lucky guest!).
Pop the sign near the bar or the entrance to the reception room so guests see it early, and have your best man or MC announce the winner straight after the dance.
Table Games & Ice Breakers
Table cards placed at each setting give guests something to do while they wait for food or during the pause before speeches. Think "find the guest who…" prompts, couple trivia or conversation starters. They're brilliant at mixed tables where colleagues sit beside cousins they've never met.
How well do you know the happy couple? Answer the questions below as a table — the team with the most correct answers wins a round of drinks!
Where did they first meet? Who said "I love you" first? Who's the better cook? Who takes longer to get ready?
Wedding I Spy
An I Spy card turns your guests into roving photographers, capturing the candid moments a professional might miss. Pair it with a shared photo album or QR code and you'll wake up the next morning to dozens of unfiltered snaps.
I spy… someone crying happy tears, the best dance move, the flower girl mid-twirl, a selfie with the newlyweds, the oldest guest on the dance floor.
Snap it, share it! Upload your photos using the QR code so we can relive every moment.
Advice & Well-Wishes Cards
Advice cards are part game, part keepsake. Leave a small stack on each table and ask guests to share their best marriage advice, a date night idea or a "recipe for a good marriage". Collect them in a box or jar and save them to read on your first anniversary.
Our recipe for a happy marriage: two cups of patience, a generous pinch of laughter, and never going to bed on an argument.
Date night idea for the newlyweds: ______________. Please open on a rainy Sunday!
Lawn & Evening Games
For a garden, barn or marquee wedding, giant Jenga, Connect Four, quoits or a beer pong table give guests something to wander to during the drinks reception. A simple sign sets the tone and explains any house rules.
Let the games begin! Grab a partner and challenge the newlyweds — winners stay on.
Beer Pong: two players per team, re-racks at six, and the bride's word is final.
Reception Game Etiquette & Tips
- Keep it optional. Games should feel like an invitation, not an obligation. Nobody should be singled out or pulled up in front of the room unless they've agreed beforehand.
- Time it well. Table games work best before food or during the gap before speeches; lawn games suit the drinks reception; the sweepstake builds up to the first dance.
- Don't overdo it. Two or three well-chosen games are plenty. Too many and the day starts to feel like a team-building away day.
- Think about your guests. Choose games that suit all ages and keep jokes friendly — Grandma will be reading that card too.
- Have pens ready. A small pot of pens on every table saves a lot of hunting around.
- Prize it up. Small prizes (a bottle of fizz, a box of chocolates, first to the buffet) make games far more fun.
- Nominate a games captain. Ask your MC, a bridesmaid or an usher to announce winners and collect advice cards, so you can relax and enjoy it.
